Aim. The objective of our study was to objectively compare the reactions of gingival tissues in the area of implants made of VT-1-00 titanium and calciothermic zirconium.
Materials and methods. The study involved 38 patients aged 20 to 54 years. All patients were divided into three groups. The first (control group) included 19 people with intact dentition. The second group included patients who received implants made of VT-1-00 titanium. The third group included patients who received implants made of calciothermic zirconium. In order to determine inflammation of the mucous membrane, the Schiller-Pisarev test was used. Before assessing the inflammatory process in the area of the implant neck, the depth of the peri-implant pocket was measured using a periodontometer with color marks.
Results. The findings of the study showed that on the 7th day after implantation, 37.5% of patients with VT-1-00 titanium showed a sharply positive (+++) reaction, indicating the presence of active inflammation. In contrast, in the group with calciothermic zirconium, this indicator was half as low – 18.2%. After 14 days, a general decrease in the intensity of the inflammatory reaction was noted in all groups; however, the most favorable results were observed in patients with zirconium implants, where no cases of inflammation were recorded at all. Differences in the depth of periodontal pockets between the upper and lower jaws, as well as between the right and left sides, were insignificant. According to the results of our study, the implant material – titanium or zirconium – also does not significantly affect the depth of periodontal pockets.
Conclusions. The obtained data indicate that calciothermic zirconium demonstrates higher biocompatibility compared to titanium grade VT-1-00, which is manifested in less pronounced inflammatory reactions from the peri-implant soft tissues. This is of significant clinical importance, since gingival inflammation is one of the main factors that can complicate the process of osseointegration and reduce long-term implant stability.
